Can you imagine living in a world without music? Music is something that will probably be around forever. Music is a form of personal expression that has developed over the centuries and influenced the lives of many people in our society. After music recordings became popular, the distribution of music became a business known as the music industry. The music industry is full of singers, songwriters, musicians and producers who either belong to indie labels or major labels. In order to get signed to one of these labels a music artist usually has to have sound distinctiveness, audio difference, similarity, song appeal, commerciality and image (Rutter 23-24). An argument that one could propose is that image shouldn’t matter if the music artist is talented, but in our society people want to be entertained with the music they hear as well as the image of the music artist. During an interview, successful A&R Lenny Santiago stated that as a music artist, “people have to either want to be you or believe you" (Def Jam). Having an image in the music industry is what sets a music artist apart from others.

Our world has a music industry full of talented artists all over the country. Some music artist such as Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston or Beyoncé, have been able to sell numerous records in the industry. These amazingly talented artists have become idols in America and other countries, but their careers weren’t able to thrive from talent alone. When a person hears the song of a new music artist for the first time, they are unlikely to worry about what the artist may look like. The person will either like the song or dislike the song. When a person see’s a music artist for the first time, they are more willing to judge the artist based on their appearance. Most people become fans of music artist with appealing images. The fans want to look, dress and act like their favorite music artist. These images have influenced the way the music industry operates. Joni Mitchell shared that she had “heard someone from the music business saying they are no longer looking for talent, they want people with a certain look and a willingness to cooperate”(Joni Mitchell). In this society, the utilization of images in the music industry are seeming to overlook the talent of the music artist. A popular singing group during the 1980’s known as Milli Vanilli is a prime example of how an image can cause people to overlook the true talent of an artist. Milli Vanilli was a singing group made up of two members by the names of Robert Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan. These two members were very attractive men who were able to get Milli Vanilli three number one hits and a Grammy award for Best New Artist. Unfortunately, Milli Vanilli was revealed as a group that had no true vocal talent after being exposed for lip synching during a live MTV performance (VanHemert). There has been several lip synching incidents since the Milli Vanilli exposure.

Having a good image in the music industry doesn’t mean that the artist lacks true talent. Lady Gaga is one of the most successful pop artists in the country. She has written some of America’s best hit songs, and has written songs for some of the best mainstream artist in the music industry. Gaga’s talent speaks for itself, but her image can be very extreme. Lady Gaga has been able to take fashion to the next level. She has created an image that has captured the attention of millions of viewers. One of Lady Gaga’s most interesting fashion choices is the outfit she decided to wear to the 2010 MTV VMAs. Gaga has been able to show the music industry how wild her image can be by accepting her award in an outfit made completely out of raw meat. As weird as it may seems, her bold image is what makes her career so successful. Though her musical talent is what got her started in the industry, her image is something that she will always be known for throughout her career (Germanotta). Another artist known for a unique image is Hip Hop artist, Nicki Minaj. Nicki Minaj started out as a regular female rapper from New York. She was discovered then signed by Young Money. After being signed, Nicki Minaj became more dramatic with her image. She made pink wigs popular and she made girls want to be like Barbie. Nicki Minaj is known to have an image that varies from very sexy to very childlike. Nicki Minaj’s image is also very unpredictable. She has one of the largest fan bases in the US and her image has influenced a lot of young women and men. She is very talented as an artist, but her fans care about her image just as much as the music she releases. Nicki Minaj’s image has become so relevant that she has been able to start her own clothing line and perfume lime. Recently, Nicki Minaj’s image has become more natural instead of dramatic. Her fans have been at an uproar about recent pictures and videos that Nicki has shown revealing her natural hair. During her time as a judge on American Idol, Nicki Minaj’s image started to develop into a more mature look. Now that Nicki is showing her natural side, her fans are appreciating her going back to a more authentic image.

Although image in the music industry is known for having a lot of positive effects, it has also negatively affected the careers of some popular music artist. When a music artist has created a certain image for themselves, society becomes familiar with that image. If an artist decides to change their image they may be ridiculed or harassed by the paparazzi and their fans may be disappointed. Miley Cyrus is a great pop singer who became famous from the old television show known as “Hannah Montana.” Miley Cyrus was able to start a great career in the music industry as a pop singer. Most of her fans were teenage girls that looked up to Miley Cyrus and her television character, Hannah Montana. As Miley grew older she started experimenting with things that were outside of the image that society had placed on her. As a result, Hannah Montana wasn’t being viewed on Disney Channel and the media turned Miley’s image into something that needed to be looked down upon. In reality, Miley was only being a teenager, but society wasn’t willing to consider the fact that all humans make mistakes. Eventually, Miley continued to rebel against the innocent image that everyone expected her to have. She began to change her image by hanging around with a different crowd, cutting her hair and doing the opposite of what society expected. Miley brought attention to herself by “twerking” on stage with a few hip hop artists. This bold move captured the attention of the media and Miley became noticed for a completely different image. A lot of her fans were turned away, but Miley gained a new group of fans who appreciated the new image she had created for herself. As she gained a new fan base, she began to release new music. She started working on a new album and worked her way back into the spotlight with a more bizarre image. A lot of people from her culture are still against how she portrays herself in the music industry, but Miley’s career is finally back on the rise. Image has become important in the music industry because it influences your career.

Justin Bieber is one of the most famous young pop singers of this generation. His career began to rise within the music industry during his early teenage years. People were beginning to perceive Justin as a young, handsome teenage boy who was able to build one of the largest fan bases of this generation. Bieber's life was constantly being watched by fans and the media, so his image was something that he always had to try to manage. Justin Bieber, much similar to Miley Cyrus, is a teenager who was forced to grow up in an industry where it can be hard to live your life as a normal teenager. As Justin began to developed friendships with a few hip hop artist, he was perceived negatively within the media. His music was still being released, his fans were still in love with the pop sensation, but his image was being held up on a pedestal. Recently, Bieber has been the main focus of a lot of headlines in the media because of the image he has been portraying. The behaviors that Justin has chosen to demonstrate are activities that other people participate in all of the time, but these behaviors have negatively affected Justin because society isn’t as willing to accept a new image for him. Bruce Serbin thinks that Bieber “should be known as the 19-year-old pop sensation whose good looks and talented vocals have captivated a nation of young girls(Serbin). Justin Bieber’s image had become so important that people began to rebel against his new image by forming a petition to get him deported out of the country(Chris Welch). When society expects you to live up to a certain image, it becomes hard for a music artist to live life without being judged.

Some artist struggle to even start a career in the music industry because of the demand for an appealing image. As a music artist, society expects you to dress a certain way and to behave a certain way which affects how the music industry operates. To have a successful career as an artist in the music industry, John Battaglia thinks that an artist should understand that “people don’t get an impression from you; they get an impression from the image you project. That’s why talent is not enough to make it in this business.(1)” In this world, people aren’t just interested in the way a music artist sounds, so to get a record deal most artist need to have the total package. Musician Daniel Simmons is a band member who learned how important image is to the music industry through personal experiences. While his band was trying to start a career by making music, their label made it clear that their image is necessary for them to have a chance in the music industry. Daniel shared that “there has to be an “image” if you want to do it. One of the first things our label said to us was we had to find ours. They said we really didn’t have one. What we thought was we really didn’t care. But for some reason you have to have an image to sell(Sarah Wells)”. Without creating an image that appeals to society, it becomes a lot harder for a music artist to sell records or to gain fans. People are likely to support a music artist with an image more than a music artist that appears to live an average life.

I created a survey to get more opinions from different people on Facebook. After posting my survey online, ten people decided to participate. I wanted to know what people thought was valued more in our world between talent and image. Fifty percent of the participants believed that talent is valued more. Forty percent felt that both talent and imaged have equal value, but only ten percent of the participant said that imaged was valued more than talent. These percentages seemed to be what I expected from the general question because there are a lot of industries in our world that seem to be focused on both the talent and image of those in their specific industry. There are also a lot of industries that focus more on talent while others focus on the images of others. About eighty percent of my participants are people who listen to music very often, the other twenty percent is considered to listen to music some but not often. Seven out of ten people who took my survey said that the appearance or image of a music artist is important. In the music industry a lot of music artist may seem to change their image after they become famous. Ninety percent of my participants agree that the artist do change their image while ten percent chose to disagree. Fashion has also become a big part of the music industry. Most music artists are shown wearing designer clothes, or creating unique or bizarre fashion trends. I asked my participants if they thought that music artists get more attention when they are more fashionable; Ninety percent of the participants believe that this was true about music artist while ten percent agreed that it happens sometimes. Finally I decided to ask them what they believed the music industry valued more between talent and image. Ninety percent of the participants believe that image is valued more in the music industry while ten percent believe that talent is valued more than image.

Technology has created a lot of paradigm shifts in our society and it is changing the music industry. With artist being able to use autotune to have perfect pitch it is becoming more convenient for a music artist to start a career without having any true singing talent. A lot of record labels are able to promote a music artist with a good image, but it may become difficult to promote that artist if they aren't considered talented. Music has been changing a lot for centuries with different types of styles and instrumentation. What our society considers music would be frowned upon by those who lived a few centuries ago. Even the different generations currently living in this country have different views about the type of music that is popular now. When did the focus stray from the music onto the image of the performing the music? Maybe image has always been a part of the music industry, but what would happen if there wasn't a focus on image. I think that a music artist should be considered a great music artist based on their talents and ability to perform. Music artist should be able to feel comfortable as they perform without worrying about being judged by the outfits they wear or the appearance they are expected to have every day. Music is something that the ears can hear, not just what the eyes can see.
